Whale excursions
One
finds whales in all oceans of the world. It is on the St.
Lawrence that one can observe the largest variety of whales
and marine mammals.
Less
than 20 minutes from the chalet, in the fjord of
Saguenay, discover the whales, the belugas and the seals
in a landscape of a rare beauty. With the crossing over
of Tadoussac and fjord Saguenay, the St. Lawrence takes
on the odor of the sea... Can be classified as part of the
maritime estuary. The variations in the depth and the temperature
of water as well as the presence of particular currents,
generates a rich mosaic ecosystem. In this area, lives an
abundance of the tinniest plankton & the most enormous
marine mammals. Many species of whales come here to be nourished.
They can often be observed along the coast or abroad Tadoussac.
Among
the species which visit the area, one finds mainly small
rorqual, rorqual common, beluga and humpback whales. The
beluga frequents the St. Lawrence all year round and constitutes
as one of the rarest Cetacean in the world.
Whale
watching cruises
Several companies propose daily cruises (2 to 3 hours) on
the St. Lawrence; departing at the Tadoussac & other
marinas. (Tours available during summer & early autumn).
Pneumatic boats (Zodiacs) provide
an unforgettable adventure for the tourist. Larger boats
are also available for those who would prefer a view at
a higher level.
These companies collaborate regularly to locate the place
where the whales nourish themselves. One can closely admire
these giants of the sea, in their natural habitat and discover
the lighthouses & legends of the St. Lawrence.
One can also observe the Saguenay river,
running magnificently between steep cliffs, coves, bays,
points etc… follow one another to create a breathtaking
landscape. These cruises on the fjord are offered at the
dock in Baie-Sainte-Catherine & other marinas.
N.B.
It is important to wear very rigorous warm clothing, due
to the extreme temperatures.
Reservations for the excursions can be made from
the Chalet.
